Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable often brings up fear and resistance. We don’t want to appear weak, so we hide behind protective armor.
I’m guilty of avoiding emotional intimacy. After a harsh breakup, I closed myself off in new relationships, too wary of getting hurt again. I became skilled at projecting confidence, keeping parts of myself locked away. But this armor that insulates us from pain also separates us from profound love and self-discovery. As Brené Brown says, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.”
True strength comes not from being invulnerable but from having the courage to reveal our full humanity — joys, sorrows, shame, pride, anger, loneliness, all of it. This requires relinquishing control and embracing uncertainty.
When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we foster deeper authentic connections. We gain insight into our emotional patterns. We break open to new possibilities.
Yes, opening your heart leaves you susceptible to pain. But only by doing so can you experience the immense rewards. The gifts vulnerability offers in exchange for temporary discomfort will empower you to grow.

I’ve always loved writing, though I pursued a more traditional career path in business. It wasn’t until later in life that I allowed myself to follow my creative dreams. Of course, we have responsibilities and people counting on us. But we also owe it to ourselves to feed our souls.
Make space for your passions. Take that painting class, learn to dance, and study ancient history. Dare to get messy and color outside the lines, even if others don’t understand.
Stay curious about the world through books, documentaries, and rich conversations. Keep expanding your perspective. Growth comes from leaning into our passions, not just accomplishing tasks.
You contain multitudes of facets within you waiting to be explored. By uncovering and nurturing your passions, you honor your uniqueness. Don’t leave gifts dormant out of fear or complacency. Choose to unleash your hidden self.

Leaving a Legacy
As we reach for the mountaintop of self-actualization, it’s human nature also to crave leaving a lasting impact. We want our lives to mean something.

But a legacy doesn’t have to be something grandiose. It can be found in small, daily acts of compassion. A kind word to a struggling friend. Volunteering in your community and teaching someone a new skill, standing up for truth and justice, and living your values out loud.
These everyday choices influence others, improving society. They show meaningful principles — the next generation will inherit the world we leave behind.
Of course, we also hope to leave a legacy within our families in how we raise our children and nurture our loved ones. And through accomplishing meaningful work that contributes value to the world. But at its core, a legacy is about your positive impact on people and your community. It’s about the energy you leave behind.
Consider who you were inspired by. How did they shape your attitudes and path? Honor them by paying it forward through your actions. See the power you have to lift others, even in small ways. That is true immortality.
