The ISS maintains an orbit with an altitude of between 330 km (205 mi) and 435 km (270 mi). Utilizing re-boost maneuvers, the ISS orbit is raised periodically to higher heights to avoid orbital degradation. ISS orbits typically decay by about 1 km (0.6 mi) per month.
As of April 2022, the ISS has been occupied for 22 years and five months (2 November 2000). This is the most prolonged continuous human presence in space, having surpassed the previous record of 9 years and 357 days held by MIR.
The station has been continuously occupied for 8,195 days since the arrival of Expedition 1 on 2 November 2000. This is equal to over 1% of humanity’s time in space. The ISS is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2028.
With the recent invasion of Russia to Ukraine, the future of the ISS has been put in question. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, has said that they will not be a part of the ISS after 2024. This means that the ISS will have to rely on other countries for funding and supplies.
