What is the Gregorian Calendar?
The Gregorian calendar is the most widely used civil calendar in the world. It is named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582. The calendar was intended to replace the Julian calendar, in use since 45 BC.
The main difference between the two calendars is that while the Julian calendar uses a leap year every four years, the Gregorian calendar only uses a leap year when there is a requirement for it – specifically, when the date falls three years after a century year (e.g., 1700, 1800, and 1900) and not on an ordinary year like 2000 or 2100.
Pope Gregory's motivation for creating a new calendar was to bring Easter back into line with the spring equinox. Easter is determined by the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. The Julian calendar was slowly drifting out of alignment with astronomical reality.
The Gregorian calendar has been adopted by most Catholic countries and Protestant denominations in Europe. It also gradually gained acceptance throughout the world – although several countries (e.g., Greece) continue to use their national calendars.
What Does 22.02.2022 Mean?
22.02.2022 is just the number corresponding to today’s date in the gregorian calendar. It's nothing special. There's no mystic meaning behind it. Sorry to be the party pooper!
